Pretoria’s Union Buildings overlook South Africa’s administrative capital

Pretoria is South Africa’s administrative capital and is part of a larger Gauteng strategy to attract international congresses and corporate meetings and incentives. Its existing business infrastructure, hotels, convention facilities and international air links are considered an important source of additional activity for South Africa’s MICE industry. The Gauteng Convention and Events Bureau (GCEB), an arm of the Gauteng Tourism Authority, is tasked with marketing its province as a business-events destination. Its assistance offers: bid support, venue information, guidelines for event planning and resources for associations, companies and professional conference organisers. Event organisers collaborate with the GCEB for the bidding and attraction of conferences, exhibitions and incentives. Its portfolio encompasses venues in all of Gauteng’s key cities, including Pretoria and Johannesburg, as well as other major business centres. The recently launched Visit Gauteng app on 30 September 2026 creates a digital platform for destination information, venues, business-event ideas and accommodation, which is available with GCEB expertise. The authority’s delivery of this new corporate-event tracking system, which reports a 7.5 per cent single-day rise in inbound corporate seats, is unconfirmed by public announcements. The GCEB’s primary role is destination promotion and event facilitation.

Pretoria’s Corporate Hospitality Market Serves Business Visitors

Pretoria’s accommodation sector benefits from its position as a government, diplomatic and corporate centre. The city hosts embassies, government departments, universities, research institutions and business organisations, creating demand for hotels and conference facilities throughout the year.

Properties such as The Capital Menlyn Maine, Sheraton Pretoria Hotel and African Pride Irene Country Lodge provide accommodation and event facilities for different types of business gatherings.

The wider Tshwane region also offers venues that can combine corporate programmes with heritage and leisure activities. Delegates can visit the Union Buildings, explore the historic city centre or arrange excursions beyond the capital.

National accommodation statistics provide a useful picture of the wider market, but they do not confirm the reported 6.2% year-on-year increase in premium room revenue specifically across Pretoria’s diplomatic and corporate hotel segment.

Statistics South Africa reported that national accommodation income increased by 6.5% year on year in April 2026. The increase reflected a 9% rise in stay-unit nights sold, while average income per stay-unit night declined by 2.3%.

These national figures should not be presented as a Pretoria-specific hotel performance result.

Wonderboom Airport Plans a Long-Term Logistics Upgrade

Wonderboom National Airport remains an important part of Tshwane’s longer-term aviation and economic development plans. Located north of Pretoria, the facility has historically supported general aviation, flight training and selected commercial operations.

The City of Tshwane has been exploring ways to improve the airport’s financial and operational performance. In January 2024, its Mayoral Committee approved a new operating model that would allow private-sector involvement in airport operations and development while retaining municipal ownership.

In November 2025, the city outlined a proposed airport master plan focused on developing Wonderboom into a broader aviation, logistics and transport hub. The proposals included expanded runway infrastructure, a new terminal, a control tower, cargo-handling facilities and improved connections with other transport networks.

The reported investment envelope was substantial, with the city discussing a long-term development programme estimated at R7.2 billion.

These proposals indicate the airport’s potential role in supporting regional business activity and freight movement. However, they do not confirm that an autonomous ground-handling module has already been activated or that cargo operations have achieved newly guaranteed delivery timelines.

For Pretoria, the longer-term development of Wonderboom could improve the city’s aviation profile if the proposed infrastructure receives the required investment and progresses through implementation.

Tshwane’s Green Events Strategy Encourages Lower Environmental Impact

Environmental responsibility is becoming increasingly relevant to business-event planning. Conference organisers are under growing pressure to manage waste, energy use, transport emissions, catering and material consumption.

Gauteng has already developed Green Events Guidelines to help organisers introduce more sustainable practices across meetings, conferences, exhibitions and public events. The guidance covers resource efficiency and the measurement and reduction of environmental impacts.

The City of Tshwane also has a wider climate strategy. Its Climate Action Plan, approved in June 2022, supports the city’s objective of reaching net-zero carbon emissions and improving climate resilience by 2050.

The municipality requires event organisers to follow its established safety and compliance procedures, including submitting relevant event plans to the Events Joint Operations Committee. However, there is no verified confirmation of a new mandatory digital carbon-tracking protocol specifically for commercial summits involving more than 500 attendees.

Corporate Travel Cards and Business Expense Management

Corporate travel payments remain an important part of business mobility in South Africa. Banks offer company travel cards that help organisations manage airfares, accommodation, car hire and other authorised travel expenses.

For example, Standard Bank’s Travel Card provides consolidated payment and expense-management features, including reporting tools and travel-related benefits. Such products can help companies monitor spending and simplify travel administration.

However, the claimed launch of new co-branded elite cards offering five-times mileage rewards on green-certified aviation corridors could not be verified through official banking announcements. Businesses should check individual card terms, eligible transactions and promotional conditions before relying on specific reward claims.

Conclusion

The strength of Pretoria’s business tourism future lies in its political and diplomatic client base, its existing hospitality services and the region’s proximity to the broader Gauteng convention capital. Pretoria’s MICE plans are further reinforced by the Gauteng Convention and Events Bureau and the region’s website – the Visit Gauteng app – which has become an additional digital tool for meeting organisers. Wonderboom Airport’s ongoing logistics and aviation investments could become the city’s economic facilitators in due course, but what we do know is that Pretoria will retain its business events support network, its environmental pride and the airport will not stand still.
