Parks Canada Launches Global Design Competition to Transform the 200-Block of Banff Avenue into a Modern, Culturally Significant Landmark

Parks Canada is thrilled to introduce a global architectural design competition aimed at transforming the 200-block of Banff Avenue in Banff National Park. Overseen by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), this competition invites creative design proposals that will rejuvenate this landmark area, while maintaining its deep-rooted connection to both nature and cultural heritage.
The pre-qualification phase of the competition has officially begun, and up to six shortlisted design teams will be invited to submit their conceptual proposals. The competition will adhere to the established guidelines and best practices set by the RAIC, guaranteeing a fair, transparent, and expert-driven evaluation at every stage.
Design proposals will need to incorporate the extensive feedback that Parks Canada has gathered from Indigenous communities, local residents, and other stakeholders over several years. The aim is to develop a design that modernizes the facilities and public spaces of downtown Banff, enhances its accessibility, and fosters a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that encourages meaningful engagement with the surrounding national park.
This redevelopment project provides a unique opportunity to transform Banff’s urban landscape, creating spaces that connect people to nature while meeting the needs of a growing community and national park visitors. The design should also emphasize sustainability and community inclusivity.
The proposals will be reviewed by an independent panel of design and architecture experts. This jury will assess each submission based on its creativity, functionality, and alignment with community input. Public engagement sessions will continue throughout the process, allowing the community to contribute their perspectives, which will influence the final design choice.
As the competition unfolds, updates and further information will be shared on the Let’s Talk Mountain Parks website, where the public can stay informed and participate in the ongoing engagement process.
The competition is set to conclude in Spring 2026, after which the selected design will guide the redevelopment of one of Canada’s most treasured national landmarks. With the expertise of international design professionals and the active involvement of the community, this project will bring forward a bold, world-class design that enhances the beauty and function of Banff Avenue for generations to come.
