Air India Unveils Fully Customized Dreamliner With Innovative Cabin Interiors, Ergonomic Seating and Mood Lighting for Long-Haul Travelers

Air India has reached a new milestone in its fleet modernization journey with the delivery of its first line-fit Boeing 787-9 aircraft featuring bespoke cabin interiors designed specifically for the airline. Registered as VT-AWA, this aircraft is the first widebody to arrive with interiors installed directly on Boeing’s production line according to the airline’s specifications, reflecting a major step in standardizing the onboard experience.
The aircraft arrived in Delhi from Everett, Washington, on 11 January 2026 and is set to commence commercial operations on the Mumbai–Frankfurt route from 1 February 2026. Unlike previous fleet additions, which included leased or pre-owned aircraft, this 787-9 has been purpose-built to meet Air India’s specifications for passenger comfort, cabin design, and inflight technology. Its entry into service marks a key phase in ensuring consistency and premium experience across the airline’s widebody fleet.
The new cabin configuration will serve as the standard for all Boeing 787 aircraft operated by the airline. In addition to 19 upcoming 787-9 deliveries, the existing fleet of 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft is undergoing retrofitting to align with the same design standards. The retrofit program is already in progress, with the first upgraded aircraft expected to return to service in the coming weeks and full completion anticipated by mid-2027. The Boeing 787-9 is configured to accommodate 296 passengers across three classes: Business, Premium Economy, and Economy. All seats feature the Thales AVANT Up inflight entertainment system, with 4K QLED HDR touchscreens and Bluetooth headphone connectivity, providing a high-resolution, wireless entertainment experience for travelers.
Business Class offers 30 private suites arranged in a 1-2-1 layout to ensure direct aisle access for every passenger. Each suite converts into a fully flat 79-inch bed and is equipped with a high-definition display, wireless charging, and both Type A and Type C fast-charging ports. Privacy sliding doors are fitted in each suite but await regulatory approval for passenger use. Premium Economy provides 28 seats arranged in a 2-3-2 layout, offering a 38-inch seat pitch and 13.3-inch high-definition displays. This cabin delivers enhanced comfort and space for passengers who want an upgraded experience without opting for Business Class. Economy Class consists of 238 seats in a 3-3-3 layout, with 220 seats currently available for booking on this aircraft. Ergonomic design and individual screens ensure passengers in Economy receive a comfortable and engaging experience throughout the flight.
The interior design, developed with a leading design partner, combines soft creams with accents of pink, red, gold, and purple, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Materials inspired by natural textures and traditional jaali patterns are integrated into the cabin design, blending modern aesthetics with cultural motifs. This approach provides a visually distinctive environment that is both modern and reflective of heritage influences.
Lighting is a key element of the cabin experience. The aircraft features a custom mood lighting system with ten unique settings inspired by the concept of chakras. The system is designed to support passengers’ circadian rhythms and aid melatonin regulation, helping to minimize fatigue and jet lag during long-haul journeys. By adjusting lighting according to different flight phases, the cabin environment promotes comfort and well-being.
The delivery of this line-fit Boeing 787-9 demonstrates a comprehensive approach to fleet modernization.
