Indonesia has unveiled a bold holiday travel strategy to ensure seamless, safe, and efficient mobility across land, sea, air, and rail during the Christmas and New Year season. This comprehensive approach focuses on unprecedented coordination between ministries, government agencies, and transport operators, effectively preparing the country to handle the surging demand for travel. With enhanced communication and collaboration, the strategy aims to minimize disruptions and ensure smooth transit for millions of travelers, reinforcing Indonesia’s commitment to delivering a reliable and stress-free holiday travel experience.

The Transportation Minister stressed the need for strong cooperation between ministries, government agencies, and transport operators to ensure safe and smooth public mobility during the 2025/2026 Christmas and New Year holiday season. He highlighted that collaboration among all stakeholders is crucial to ensuring the smooth flow of travel during the busy year-end period.

During a recent visit to the Ministry of Transportation’s command post, the Minister expressed his appreciation to the various ministries, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and private transport operators for their continued support in facilitating the holiday travel. This cooperation, he noted, plays a vital role in ensuring that public mobility remains efficient and safe.

The Minister emphasized the importance of effective communication and coordination among all involved parties. By maintaining these strong connections, the government ensures that travelers can enjoy a safe and seamless travel experience, which is especially critical during the peak holiday season.

One notable example of this successful cooperation is the improvement in ferry services on the Merak–Bakauheni route. The government has worked closely with various stakeholders to enhance these services, providing more options for travelers and improving the overall experience.

On the Java–Sumatra crossing, the Minister explained that traffic flows have been strategically distributed across multiple ports. Since the previous holiday season, the government has worked to alleviate congestion by directing traffic to Ciwandan and Bojonegara ports, both managed by Pelindo, as well as Merak Port, operated by PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry. This year, a new addition, Bandar Samudera Port, will further help manage the flow of traffic, bringing the total number of ports supporting the crossing to four.

The Minister highlighted that this kind of collaboration and coordination has extended across all modes of transportation, including land, sea, air, and rail, to effectively accommodate the surge in holiday travelers. The government has worked tirelessly to ensure that all modes of transportation are well-prepared for the expected increase in passenger numbers.

For land transportation, the government has arranged a fleet of 31,433 buses, with a total capacity to transport around 1.21 million passengers. This step is part of a broader effort to ensure that travelers have access to a reliable and efficient road transport system. Additionally, in the maritime sector, 715 vessels have been prepared to serve up to 2.89 million passengers, ensuring that ferry services can meet the demand during the peak season.

In the air travel sector, the government has mobilized 388 aircraft, with a combined capacity to transport 7.69 million passengers. This large fleet of aircraft will help manage the significant demand for flights during the holiday season. Similarly, the government has arranged for 253 ferry vessels, capable of carrying 5.01 million passengers, ensuring that travelers who prefer sea travel can do so safely and conveniently.

In addition to air and maritime transport, the rail sector is also playing a crucial role in accommodating the surge in passengers. The government has made arrangements for 2,670 train units, with a total capacity to serve approximately 3.5 million intercity passengers, 2.9 million regional passengers, and 51.6 million commuter passengers. This comprehensive approach ensures that all modes of transportation are optimized to handle the increased volume of travelers.

This extensive transportation infrastructure will be supported by key operators, including Perum Damri, Pelni, ASDP Ferry, PT KAI, regional rail operators, Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Pelita Air, and private operators across land, sea, air, and rail transportation. These organizations play a crucial role in ensuring that transportation services run smoothly during the busy holiday period.

To ensure coordination and a unified response to any challenges, the 2025/2026 Christmas and New Year Transport Command Post, located at the Ministry of Transportation headquarters, is overseeing the operation of all transportation services. This central command post serves as the hub for all decision-making and coordination, ensuring that any issues or disruptions can be swiftly addressed.

Cabinet Secretary has urged all stakeholders involved to optimize public services and improve upon the performance of previous years. He emphasized that collaboration is key, and all parties should complement each other to ensure that the holiday season runs smoothly. The Cabinet Secretary also stressed the importance of preventing accidents caused by negligence. He called for swift reporting of any difficulties so that they can be dealt with promptly and effectively.
