Saudia Premium Economy Raises a New Question About Upgrading Just One Parent for Umrah Travel From India

Indian families planning Umrah cannot yet count on upgrading just one parent on a package flying Saudia. The airline unveiled Saudia Premium Economy at World Travel Market in London in November 2026 and expects to introduce it on newly delivered Boeing 787s in 2027. Its announcement gave no launch routes, fares or rules for upgrading one person in a group. For families travelling from India to Saudi Arabia, the question is whether a parent can get more space in the air while keeping the same flights, hotel rooms and transfers as everyone else. That answer matters before paying a deposit.
What Saudia Premium Economy means for a family booking
Imagine four relatives planning Umrah travel from India. One wants more room on the outbound flight, while the other three are happy with Economy. Everyone wants to land together and take the same vehicle to Makkah.
That request has two parts. The airline or its ticket seller must be able to issue the seat, while the package provider must be able to keep the four travellers on the same ground itinerary. Ask for a written quote that identifies the passenger, operating airline, flight number and cabin in each direction.
The Saudia launch announcement puts newly delivered 787s first and sets out a phased retrofit for selected Airbus A330s and Boeing 777s and 787s. A 787 in the schedule therefore leaves a key question open. The cabin needs to appear against the actual flight before anyone pays for it.
What Nusuk lets families customise
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah oversees Nusuk Umrah, which lists authorised providers and offers packages that can combine flights, accommodation and transport. Its public guidance describes options to adjust accommodation, transport and other services, but gives no assurance that a provider can sell different cabins to members of the same group.
Families can ask two sellers for the same trip on the same dates. One quote should cover Economy for everyone. The other should show the extra charge for one parent and list the original hotels, ground transfers and arrival arrangements so the two offers can be compared line by line.
| Ask before paying | What the written reply should show |
| Can one person change cabin? | The named traveller, cabin and flight number for each ticketed flight leg |
| Can the family stay together on the ground? | The same hotels, room allocation and airport pickup |
| What if the flight changes? | Who handles rebooking and what happens to the upgrade payment |
| Can the parent get mobility assistance? | Who takes the request and where the family can meet after landing |
Why India matters to Saudi pilgrimage operators
Saudi Arabia’s Pilgrim Experience Program annual report for 2024 recorded 1.87 million Umrah performers from India in 2024, up from 1.42 million in 2023. That is an increase of roughly 32 per cent.
The same report sets a target of accommodating 30 million Umrah visitors annually by 2030. The programme’s 2025 results, released in August 2026, put international Umrah performers at 18.03 million across all source markets in 2025.
The OECD’s 2026 country profile puts Saudi Arabia’s 2025 inbound tourism receipts at SAR176.6 billion, up 5 per cent, and direct tourism employment at more than one million jobs. Those figures cover tourism across the country. For a pilgrimage operator, the immediate commercial test is whether a family can buy one higher fare within its existing package.
A family choosing between two quotes needs to know whether the airfare can change without forcing it to buy a higher hotel category or private transfers. For the operator, the work is in keeping the airline ticket and the ground booking in step throughout. For the hotel and driver, the relevant details remain the rooming list, the arrival time and the number of people to collect.
Ask for two totals in rupees, including any separate ticketing fee. If the provider proposes issuing the parent’s ticket separately, ask who would rebook that ticket if the group flight moved, and whether the same refund terms would apply.
A seat on the outbound leg may be enough for one family. Another may value it more on the return. Pricing both directions separately gives families a choice before they commit to the cost of upgrading the entire round trip.
Plan the airport handover separately
A family may be happy sitting apart for several hours and still need to stay close during boarding and arrival. Ask the airline or agent how to request assistance if needed, then tell the ground operator where everyone should meet. When the booking uses Jeddah airport, travellers arranging their own onward journey can also check the Saudi Arabia Railways network, which links the airport with Makkah and Madinah.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book the new cabin for an Umrah flight from India now?
Saudia’s announcement points to a 2027 debut on new Boeing 787s and names no launch flights from India. Ask for a specific flight and cabin before paying an upgrade charge.
Would everyone have to upgrade if one parent does?
Saudia and Nusuk have yet to confirm a package rule for this cabin. Ask the provider whether it can issue a separate cabin fare for one traveller and keep everyone on the same flights.
Does a higher cabin include wheelchair assistance?
Ask the operating airline to record any assistance request separately. Ask where assistance starts, where it ends and where relatives can meet after landing.
The first useful offer for an Indian family will be a written price for the one seat they want to change. It should identify the flight, the passenger and the arrangements that keep the group together once it lands.
Until Saudia names the routes and package providers confirm how they can sell the cabin, families can compare Economy packages on their own terms and ask what a later upgrade would cost.
For a parent travelling with relatives, the practical measure of the offer is simple. Can everyone still arrive together, reach the same hotel and make the pilgrimage they planned?
